Safe and Effective Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

Ear Health Check using Video Otoscopy

by Catryn Roberts BSc Audiology

What is microsuction?

  • Microsuction is a wax removal technique using a very fine sterile suction device under a microscope

  • A gentle suction device is used to provide immediate and pain free results

  • Using a microscope, the Audiologist can clearly see inside the ear canal during the procedure making it an entirely controlled, safe and effective treatment

  • No need to apply ear drops (e.g olive oil, Earol) for days/weeks before the procedure, only two or three days prior

What is Ear Wax?

  • Ear wax, or medically known as 'cerumen' is a natural substance produced by the ear canal which aims to trap dust and other small particles to prevent them from reaching and potentially damaging the eardrum

  • Normally the wax along with any trapped dust or debris falls out of the ear, however for some people the wax remains in the ear canal, becomes impacted and causes more issues

  • Wax impactions can be caused due to narrow ear canals, sharp 1st and/or 2nd bend of the ear canal, the presence of bony portions inside the ear (exostosis), unnecessary use of cotton buds, or regular use of Hearing Aids, ear buds and ear plugs
