What is Ear Wax?
Ear wax, or medically known as 'cerumen' is a natural substance produced by the ear canal which aims to trap dust and other small particles to prevent them from reaching and potentially damaging the eardrum
Normally the wax along with any trapped dust or debris falls out of the ear, however for some people the wax remains in the ear canal, becomes impacted and causes more issues
Wax impactions can be caused due to narrow ear canals, sharp 1st and/or 2nd bend of the ear canal, the presence of bony portions inside the ear (exostosis), unnecessary use of cotton buds, or regular use of Hearing Aids, ear buds and ear plugs
Symptoms of wax build up
The amount and type of wax a person creates varies from person to person. If impacted wax is left untreated, it can cause:
Decreased hearing
'Blocked' or fullness sensation
Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
Dizziness
Ear Pain
Itchiness/Irritation in the ear canal
